What is Ashtottari Dasha?

Ashtottari Dasha is a 108-year planetary period system that uses 8 planets — Ketu is excluded. "Ashtottari" means "108" in Sanskrit. The planet order and year allocations are: Sun (6), Moon (15), Mars (8), Mercury (17), Saturn (10), Jupiter (19), Rahu (12), Venus (21). Total = 108 years.

According to classical texts, Ashtottari Dasha should be used when Rahu is placed in a Kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th house) or Trikona (1st, 5th, 9th house) from the Lagna lord. Some astrologers use it for nighttime births, while others apply it based on specific Nakshatra conditions.

The starting Dasha in Ashtottari is determined by the birth Nakshatra, but the Nakshatra-to-planet mapping is different from Vimshottari. Only specific Nakshatras are assigned to the 8 planets, and the calculation method differs slightly.

Ashtottari vs Vimshottari Differences

There are 5 key differences between Ashtottari and Vimshottari Dasha:

  • Cycle length: Ashtottari = 108 years, Vimshottari = 120 years
  • Planets used: Ashtottari = 8 (no Ketu), Vimshottari = 9 (all Navagraha)
  • Year allocations: Completely different — e.g., Moon gets 15 years in Ashtottari but 10 in Vimshottari
  • Planet sequence: Different order than Vimshottari
  • Applicability: Ashtottari has specific conditions for when it should be used (Rahu in Kendra/Trikona from Lagna lord)

Many astrologers check both Ashtottari and Vimshottari Dasha timelines. When both systems indicate the same timing for an event, the prediction reliability increases.

Frequently Asked Questions

Use Ashtottari Dasha when Rahu is placed in a Kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th house) or Trikona (1st, 5th, or 9th house) from the Lagna lord in your birth chart. Some traditions also use Ashtottari for nighttime births. If you are unsure, use Vimshottari as the default and check Ashtottari as a secondary reference.

Classical texts do not give a definitive reason for Ketu's exclusion. One theory is that Ketu's influence is considered implicit through Rahu — since Rahu and Ketu are always opposite each other in the chart, Rahu's dasha period inherently carries Ketu's shadow influence.

The Ashtottari year allocations are: Sun (6), Moon (15), Mars (8), Mercury (17), Saturn (10), Jupiter (19), Rahu (12), Venus (21). Total = 108 years. Note that Moon gets 15 years in Ashtottari compared to 10 in Vimshottari, and Venus gets 21 years compared to 20.

Yes. Open the Advanced Settings panel in the calculator above and change the "Dasha System" dropdown to "Ashtottari Dasha." The calculator will compute your Ashtottari Dasha timeline using the 108-year cycle with 8 planets.
