A Vedic birth chart — known as a Kundli, Janam Kundali, or Rashi chart — is a celestial snapshot of the sky at your exact moment of birth. It captures the positions of all nine planets across twelve houses and twelve zodiac signs, creating a unique cosmic fingerprint that guides astrological interpretation.
The Structure of a Vedic Chart
Unlike Western circular charts, North Indian Vedic charts use a diamond-shaped layout divided into 12 houses. South Indian charts use a rectangular grid. Both contain the same information — only the visual arrangement differs.
The most important elements are:
- Ascendant (Lagna): The zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth — it determines which house is the 1st house
- Houses (Bhavas): 12 segments representing different life areas
- Planets (Grahas): The 9 Vedic planets placed in their respective houses
- Signs (Rashis): The 12 zodiac signs that occupy the houses
The 12 Houses Explained
Each house governs specific life domains:
- 1st House (Ascendant): Self, personality, physical appearance, health
- 2nd House: Wealth, family, speech, early education
- 3rd House: Siblings, courage, short journeys, communication
- 4th House: Mother, home, property, happiness, education
- 5th House: Children, creativity, romance, intelligence, past karma
- 6th House: Enemies, disease, debt, daily work, service
- 7th House: Marriage, partnerships, business, public image
- 8th House: Longevity, mysteries, inheritance, transformation
- 9th House: Father, fortune, religion, higher education, long journeys
- 10th House: Career, status, authority, public life, government
- 11th House: Gains, income, friends, elder siblings, aspirations
- 12th House: Losses, expenses, foreign travel, spirituality, liberation
Planetary Placements
Where each planet sits in your chart — which house and sign it occupies — determines its influence on your life. Some placements are considered favorable (exaltation, own sign, friendly signs), while others may present challenges (debilitation, enemy signs).
The Moon's placement is particularly important as it determines your Nakshatra and, consequently, your Vimshottari Dasha sequence.
Key Concepts for Beginners
Yogas
Yogas are special planetary combinations that produce significant effects. For example, Gaja Kesari Yoga (Jupiter in a Kendra from Moon) bestows wisdom and good fortune. There are hundreds of yogas described in classical texts.
Aspects (Drishti)
In Vedic astrology, planets cast their influence (aspects) on other houses. Unlike Western astrology where aspects are based on degree, Vedic aspects are house-based. All planets aspect the 7th house from their position, but Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn have special additional aspects.
Dashas and Transits
The birth chart is static, but Dasha periods and transits provide the timing dimension. Dasha tells you which planets are "activated" during specific life periods, while transits show current planetary positions relative to your birth chart.
Start Exploring Your Chart
The first step in understanding your Vedic chart is knowing your current planetary period. Use our Dasha Calculator to discover which Mahadasha and Antardasha you're currently experiencing — it's the key to timing predictions and understanding life themes.
