Dasha Balance Calculator
The Dasha balance is the remaining duration of your first Mahadasha at the moment of birth. It is determined by how far the Moon has traversed through its birth Nakshatra. This single value sets the starting point for your entire life's Dasha timeline.

FreeWhat is Dasha Balance?
Dasha balance (also called "Dasha Shesha" or "Dasha Bhog") is the unexpired portion of the first Mahadasha at the time of birth. It is the most critical value in Dasha calculation because it determines the exact starting point of your entire planetary timeline.
Here's how it works: At birth, the Moon occupies a specific Nakshatra. Each Nakshatra is ruled by a planet — that planet becomes your first Mahadasha lord. But you don't get the full Mahadasha duration. Instead, you receive only the proportion that corresponds to the remaining portion of the Nakshatra the Moon has yet to traverse.
For example, if the Moon is exactly at the midpoint of Ashwini Nakshatra (ruled by Ketu, 7-year period), you receive a Ketu Dasha balance of 3.5 years. If the Moon is 75% through Ashwini, you get only 1.75 years of Ketu Dasha remaining at birth.
How Dasha Balance is Calculated
The Dasha balance calculation follows 4 precise steps:
- Compute the Moon's sidereal longitude at the exact birth time using astronomical algorithms and the selected Ayanamsa
- Identify the birth Nakshatra by dividing the Moon's longitude by 13°20' (each Nakshatra spans 13°20' of the zodiac)
- Calculate the remaining arc: Subtract the Moon's position from the Nakshatra's end point to find the unexpired portion
- Convert to time: Multiply the Mahadasha lord's total years by the fraction of the Nakshatra remaining. This gives the Dasha balance in years, months, and days.
The Dasha balance is extremely sensitive to birth time. A difference of just 4 minutes shifts the Moon's position by approximately 2 arc-minutes, which can change the Dasha balance by several days. For critical analysis, birth time rectification is recommended.
Frequently Asked Questions
Dasha balance sets the starting point for your entire Dasha timeline. Every subsequent Mahadasha, Antardasha, and Pratyantar date in your life is calculated forward from this single value. An error in Dasha balance shifts ALL future period boundaries.
The Moon moves approximately 13°20' per day through the zodiac. A 4-minute birth time error shifts the Moon by about 2 arc-minutes, which can change the Dasha balance by several days. A 30-minute error can shift it by weeks. For accurate Dasha balance, birth time should be precise to within 1-2 minutes.
Without exact birth time, the Dasha balance will be approximate. You can use noon as a default, but the first Mahadasha boundary could be off by months. For critical decisions, consult an astrologer for birth time rectification — a process that uses known life events to reverse-engineer the accurate birth time.
Yes. Different Ayanamsa values shift the Moon's sidereal longitude by approximately 1-2 degrees, which directly changes the Nakshatra position and Dasha balance. Lahiri, Raman, and KP Ayanamsas can produce slightly different balance values. Lahiri is the most commonly used standard.
