FreeWhat is a Dasha Period?
A Dasha period is a span of time ruled by a specific planet in Vedic Astrology. The Vimshottari Dasha system divides a 120-year life cycle into 9 sequential planetary periods called Mahadashas. Each Mahadasha subdivides into 9 Antardashas, each Antardasha into 9 Pratyantars, and so on — creating a multi-layered timing framework.
The duration of each Dasha period is fixed by the system:
- Ketu period: 7 years — spirituality, detachment, sudden shifts
- Venus period: 20 years — love, wealth, art, marriage, luxury
- Sun period: 6 years — authority, career, government, health
- Moon period: 10 years — emotions, mother, creativity, public life
- Mars period: 7 years — energy, property, siblings, courage
- Rahu period: 18 years — ambition, foreign ties, technology, obsession
- Jupiter period: 16 years — wisdom, children, wealth, spirituality
- Saturn period: 19 years — discipline, karma, hardship, longevity
- Mercury period: 17 years — intellect, business, communication, trade

Dasha Period Hierarchy
Dasha periods operate in a hierarchical structure with 5 levels of increasing precision:
- Mahadasha (Level 1): The major period, lasting 6-20 years. Sets the dominant life theme.
- Antardasha (Level 2): The sub-period within each Mahadasha, lasting months to years. Modifies the major theme.
- Pratyantar Dasha (Level 3): Sub-sub period, lasting weeks. Pinpoints the timing of specific events.
- Sookshma Dasha (Level 4): Micro period, lasting days. Used for daily-level analysis.
- Prana Dasha (Level 5): Finest period, lasting hours. Rarely used in practice due to birth time sensitivity.
Most astrologers work with 2-3 levels for practical predictions. This calculator supports up to Level 4 (Sookshma Dasha) — select your preferred depth in the Advanced Settings panel.
Frequently Asked Questions
A full Vimshottari cycle contains 9 Mahadashas (Level 1), 81 Antardashas (Level 2), 729 Pratyantars (Level 3), 6,561 Sookshmas (Level 4), and 59,049 Pranas (Level 5). Most people experience 3-5 Mahadashas in their lifetime depending on which period they are born into.
Each planet's Dasha period length reflects its Vedic astronomical significance. Venus gets the longest period (20 years) as the brightest planet visible from Earth. Sun gets the shortest (6 years) as the fastest-moving luminary through the Nakshatras. The total of all 9 periods equals exactly 120 years.
Two people born at the exact same moment in the same location would have identical Dasha periods. However, even a few minutes' difference shifts the Moon's position within the Nakshatra, changing the balance of the first Dasha period and offsetting all subsequent dates.
Dasha period accuracy depends on 2 factors: birth time precision and the astrologer's interpretation skill. With accurate birth time (within 1-2 minutes), Mahadasha and Antardasha dates are highly reliable. Pratyantar-level accuracy requires birth time precise to seconds.
