Wheel of Time

Kalachakra Dasha Calculator

Kalachakra Dasha — the "Wheel of Time" — is a unique sign-based dasha system in Vedic Astrology. Unlike planet-based systems, Kalachakra assigns periods to zodiac signs based on the Nakshatra Pada (quarter) at birth. It is considered one of the most complex and powerful dasha systems in Parashari astrology.

What is Kalachakra Dasha?

Kalachakra Dasha is a sign-based (Rashi-based) dasha system, unlike Vimshottari which is planet-based. "Kalachakra" means "Wheel of Time" in Sanskrit. The system assigns planetary periods to zodiac signs rather than planets, and the sequence changes based on the Nakshatra Pada (quarter) at birth.

There are 4 Padas in each Nakshatra. Each Pada follows a specific path through the zodiac signs — either "Savya" (clockwise) or "Apasavya" (counter-clockwise). The sign periods vary: some signs get as few as 1 year, others up to 21 years.

Kalachakra Dasha is mentioned in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra as one of the most reliable dasha systems. Parashara himself called it "the most important dasha." However, its complexity has limited its widespread adoption — most astrologers default to the simpler Vimshottari system.

How Kalachakra Works

Kalachakra Dasha has 3 unique features that set it apart from other dasha systems:

  • Sign-based, not planet-based: Periods are assigned to zodiac signs (Aries, Taurus, etc.) rather than planets (Sun, Moon, etc.). The sign's ruling planet becomes the active planet during that sign's dasha.
  • Savya and Apasavya paths: Depending on the birth Nakshatra Pada, the dasha sequence follows either a forward (Savya) or backward (Apasavya) path through the zodiac. This creates different timelines for people born in different Padas of the same Nakshatra.
  • Variable total cycle: Unlike Vimshottari's fixed 120 years, the total Kalachakra cycle length varies depending on the path — different Nakshatras produce cycles of different total durations.

Kalachakra Dasha is best used by experienced astrologers who are comfortable with sign-based analysis and understand the Savya/Apasavya distinction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Kalachakra Dasha assigns periods to zodiac signs (Aries through Pisces), while Vimshottari assigns periods to planets. Kalachakra uses Nakshatra Padas (quarters) for calculation, while Vimshottari uses the full Nakshatra. The total cycle length varies in Kalachakra but is fixed at 120 years in Vimshottari.

Savya means "clockwise" and Apasavya means "counter-clockwise." In Kalachakra Dasha, each Nakshatra Pada follows either a Savya (forward) or Apasavya (reverse) path through the zodiac signs. Which path applies depends on which Pada of which Nakshatra the Moon occupies at birth.

Kalachakra Dasha is considered by some classical authorities (including Parashara) to be the most powerful dasha system. However, it requires deeper astrological knowledge to interpret correctly. Most modern astrologers find Vimshottari sufficient for general predictions and use Kalachakra as an advanced supplementary tool.

This calculator currently focuses on Vimshottari, Yogini, and Ashtottari Dasha systems. Kalachakra Dasha requires specialized sign-based computation that is different from the standard planet-based calculation engine. For Kalachakra analysis, desktop software like Jagannatha Hora or Dhruv Astro Software is recommended.
