Moon Nakshatra Dasha Calculator

Your Moon's Nakshatra is the foundation of all Nakshatra-based Dasha systems. This calculator identifies your birth Nakshatra from the Moon's exact sidereal position and generates the complete Vimshottari Dasha timeline — all from the single data point of where the Moon stood at your birth.

Moon's Nakshatra and Dasha

The Moon's Nakshatra at birth is the single most important factor in Dasha calculation. The 27 Nakshatras divide the zodiac into equal segments of 13°20' each. Each Nakshatra is ruled by one of the 9 Vimshottari planets, creating the link between your birth moment and your Dasha timeline:

  • Ketu rules: Ashwini, Magha, Mula
  • Venus rules: Bharani, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha
  • Sun rules: Krittika, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha
  • Moon rules: Rohini, Hasta, Shravana
  • Mars rules: Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishtha
  • Rahu rules: Ardra, Swati, Shatabhisha
  • Jupiter rules: Punarvasu, Vishakha, Purva Bhadrapada
  • Saturn rules: Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada
  • Mercury rules: Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati

The Nakshatra lord becomes your first Mahadasha planet. The Moon's position within the Nakshatra determines the Dasha balance — the remaining time in that first period.

Frequently Asked Questions

Enter your birth details in the calculator above. The Moon's sidereal longitude is computed using astronomical algorithms, then divided by 13°20' to identify the Nakshatra. The result shows your Nakshatra name, its ruling planet, the Nakshatra Pada (quarter), and the Dasha balance.

If the Moon is very close to a Nakshatra boundary, even a few minutes' difference in birth time could place it in a different Nakshatra — changing the entire Dasha sequence. This is why exact birth time is critical. If you're near a boundary, try both Nakshatras and see which timeline matches your life events better.

The Nakshatra Pada (quarter) doesn't directly change the Dasha sequence, but it affects the Dasha balance calculation and is important for other astrological factors like the Navamsha chart and Kalachakra Dasha. In Vimshottari, only the overall Nakshatra position matters for the Dasha starting point.

The standard system uses 27 Nakshatras. An older system includes a 28th Nakshatra called Abhijit (part of Uttara Ashadha and Shravana). For Vimshottari Dasha calculation, the 27-Nakshatra system is always used. Some astrologers use the 28-Nakshatra system for Muhurta (electional) purposes only.
