Narayana Dasha Calculator
Narayana Dasha is a sign-based Jaimini dasha system that assigns planetary periods to zodiac signs based on the Lagna lord's position. It is one of the most powerful tools in Jaimini astrology for timing career changes, marriage, and major life events.

FreeWhat is Narayana Dasha?
Narayana Dasha is a Rashi-based (sign-based) dasha system from the Jaimini school of Vedic Astrology. Named after Lord Narayana (Vishnu), this system assigns periods to zodiac signs rather than planets. The starting sign and sequence depend on whether the Lagna (ascendant) falls in an odd or even sign.
For odd Lagna signs (Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius), the dasha sequence runs forward from the Lagna. For even signs (Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces), it runs backward. Each sign's dasha duration is calculated based on the distance of the sign lord from the sign itself.
Narayana Dasha is considered particularly effective for timing career events, financial changes, and public life developments. Many Jaimini practitioners use it as their primary dasha system, alongside Chara Dasha, for timing predictions.
How Narayana Dasha is Calculated
The Narayana Dasha calculation involves 4 steps:
- Determine the Lagna sign: The ascendant sign at birth sets the starting point and direction of the dasha sequence
- Set the sequence direction: Odd signs move forward (Aries → Taurus → Gemini...), even signs move backward (Taurus → Aries → Pisces...)
- Calculate each sign's duration: Count the number of signs between the sign and its lord. This count (1-12) determines the years for that sign's dasha period
- Apply exceptions: When the sign lord is in the sign itself, the duration is 12 years. Special rules apply for Scorpio (Mars/Ketu) and Aquarius (Saturn/Rahu)
The total cycle length varies — unlike Vimshottari's fixed 120 years, Narayana Dasha's total depends on the specific chart. This is a characteristic shared with other Jaimini dasha systems like Chara Dasha.
Frequently Asked Questions
Both are Jaimini sign-based dasha systems, but they use different calculation methods. Narayana Dasha determines sign duration by counting from the sign to its lord. Chara Dasha uses a different counting method based on K.N. Rao's or Sanjay Rath's interpretation. They often produce different timelines from the same birth data.
Narayana Dasha and Vimshottari serve different purposes. Vimshottari is planet-based and widely used for general life predictions. Narayana Dasha is sign-based and considered stronger for career timing and material life events. Many astrologers use both systems and look for agreement between them.
Each sign's period lasts between 1 and 12 years, determined by the distance between the sign and its lord. If the lord is in the same sign, the period is 12 years. The total cycle length varies by chart — it is not fixed like Vimshottari's 120 years.
Narayana Dasha requires Jaimini-specific computation that differs from standard Vimshottari calculation.
