FreeWhat is Sookshma Dasha?
Sookshma Dasha is the fourth level in the Vimshottari hierarchy: Mahadasha → Antardasha → Pratyantar → Sookshma. "Sookshma" means "subtle" or "micro" in Sanskrit. While Pratyantar Dasha gives week-level precision, Sookshma Dasha narrows the window to individual days.
Each Pratyantar period divides into 9 Sookshma periods. A complete Vimshottari cycle contains 6,561 Sookshma periods (729 × 9). The formula remains the same: (Pratyantar duration × planet's years) ÷ 120.
Sookshma Dasha is used by advanced Vedic astrologers for precise daily-level predictions, electional astrology (choosing exact dates for events), and retrospective event analysis where week-level timing isn't specific enough.
When to Use Sookshma Dasha
Sookshma Dasha is most useful in 4 scenarios:
- Daily predictions: Professional astrologers use Sookshma Dasha alongside transit charts for day-specific forecasting
- Muhurta (electional astrology): Selecting the exact day for important events — signing contracts, starting businesses, medical procedures
- Event rectification: When a known event date is used to verify or correct the birth time
- Research: Scholars studying the accuracy of Dasha systems use Sookshma-level data for statistical analysis
Most people will not need Sookshma-level analysis for general life guidance. It is primarily a tool for professional astrologers and serious students of Vedic Astrology who need day-level precision.
Frequently Asked Questions
Sookshma Dasha periods range from a few hours (Sun-Sun-Sun-Sun) to about 2 weeks (Venus-Venus-Venus-Venus). Most Sookshma periods last between 1 and 5 days.
Sookshma Dasha reliability depends entirely on birth time accuracy. At this level, even a 1-minute error in birth time can shift period boundaries by hours. Sookshma Dasha is most reliable when the birth time has been rectified by an experienced astrologer.
Sookshma Dasha is Level 4, and Prana Dasha is Level 5 (the finest level). Prana Dasha divides each Sookshma into 9 further sub-divisions lasting just hours. Prana Dasha is rarely used in practice because birth time accuracy requirements make it impractical for most charts.
Open the Advanced Settings panel below the calculator form. Under "Dasha Depth Level," select "+ Sookshma Dasha" to compute Level 4 periods. The results will show all 4 levels: Mahadasha, Antardasha, Pratyantar, and Sookshma with exact dates.
