FreeDasha in Vedic Astrology
Dasha is the timing system of Vedic Astrology (Jyotish Shastra). While Western astrology relies primarily on planetary transits for timing, Vedic Astrology uses the Dasha system as its primary timing tool — with transits as a secondary confirmation layer.
The Dasha concept originates from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), authored by Maharishi Parashara — considered the father of Vedic Astrology. Parashara described over 40 Dasha systems, but designated Vimshottari Dasha as the universal default applicable to all birth charts in the current era (Kali Yuga).
Three Dasha systems are most widely used in modern Vedic Astrology practice:
- Vimshottari Dasha: 120-year cycle, 9 planets — the universal standard used by 90%+ of Vedic astrologers
- Yogini Dasha: 36-year cycle, 8 Yoginis — simpler system, useful for cross-verification
- Ashtottari Dasha: 108-year cycle, 8 planets — conditional system for specific chart configurations
This calculator supports all three systems. The Vedic sidereal zodiac (using Ayanamsa correction) is used for all calculations — not the tropical zodiac used in Western astrology.
Frequently Asked Questions
Vedic Astrology uses the Dasha system as its primary timing tool — planetary periods that last years, giving long-term life predictions. Western astrology primarily uses transits (current planetary positions relative to the birth chart) for timing. The two approaches are complementary but methodologically different.
This calculator uses the sidereal zodiac with Ayanamsa correction — the standard in Vedic Astrology. The sidereal zodiac is aligned with the actual star positions. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac aligned with seasons. The difference (Ayanamsa) is currently about 24 degrees.
The Dasha system is described in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) by Maharishi Parashara. BPHS describes over 40 Dasha systems but designates Vimshottari as the universal default for the current era. Other classical texts like Uttara Kalamrita and Phaladeepika also discuss Dasha interpretation.
Yes. Select "Krishnamurti (KP)" from the Ayanamsa dropdown. The KP system uses the same Vimshottari Dasha calculation but with a slightly different Ayanamsa value. KP practitioners also use sub-lord theory for refined predictions within each Dasha period.
