Yogini System

Yogini Dasha Calculator

The Yogini Dasha system uses a shorter 36-year cycle with 8 Yogini periods instead of 9 planets. It is considered simpler and more direct than Vimshottari Dasha, and many astrologers use it as a confirmatory system alongside Vimshottari. What is Yogini Dasha?

Yogini Dasha is an alternative dasha system in Vedic Astrology that uses a 36-year cycle divided among 8 Yoginis. Each Yogini is associated with a planet and rules a specific number of years: Mangala (1 year, Moon), Pingala (2 years, Sun), Dhanya (3 years, Jupiter), Bhramari (4 years, Mars), Bhadrika (5 years, Mercury), Ulka (6 years, Saturn), Siddha (7 years, Venus), and Sankata (8 years, Rahu).

The total cycle is 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8 = 36 years. Because the cycle is shorter, it repeats multiple times in a lifetime, making it easier to observe and validate its predictions against actual life events.

Many astrologers consider Yogini Dasha the simplest and most reliable dasha system for quick predictions. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra mentions Yogini Dasha as a system that gives accurate results even with approximate birth times.

Yogini vs Vimshottari Dasha

There are 4 key differences between Yogini and Vimshottari Dasha:

  • Cycle length: Yogini = 36 years (repeats 3+ times in a lifetime), Vimshottari = 120 years (covers the full lifespan once)
  • Number of periods: Yogini = 8 Yogini periods, Vimshottari = 9 planetary periods
  • Ketu's role: Yogini Dasha does not include Ketu, while Vimshottari includes all 9 Navagraha planets
  • Birth time sensitivity: Yogini Dasha is less sensitive to birth time errors because of its shorter cycle and simpler structure

Professional astrologers often use Yogini Dasha as a cross-check for Vimshottari Dasha predictions. When both systems agree on the timing of an event, the prediction confidence increases. AstroSage and Dhruv Astro Software include both systems in their Kundli Calculators suite.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yogini Dasha is calculated from the birth Nakshatra, similar to Vimshottari Dasha. The Moon's Nakshatra number (1-27) is added to 3, then divided by 8. The remainder determines the starting Yogini. The balance of the first period is proportional to the Moon's position within the Nakshatra.

Neither system is universally more accurate. Yogini Dasha is easier to validate because its 36-year cycle repeats multiple times in a lifetime. Some astrologers find it more reliable for event timing. Most practitioners use both systems and look for agreement between them to increase prediction confidence.

The 8 Yoginis and their associated planets are: Mangala (Moon, 1 year), Pingala (Sun, 2 years), Dhanya (Jupiter, 3 years), Bhramari (Mars, 4 years), Bhadrika (Mercury, 5 years), Ulka (Saturn, 6 years), Siddha (Venus, 7 years), and Sankata (Rahu, 8 years). Total = 36 years.

Yes. Open the Advanced Settings panel in the calculator above and change the "Dasha System" dropdown from "Vimshottari Dasha" to "Yogini Dasha." The calculator will compute your Yogini Dasha timeline with all 8 Yogini periods and their sub-periods.
