What is Antardasha?

Antardasha (also called Bhukti or Dasha-Bhukti) is the Level 2 sub-period within each Mahadasha. Since each Mahadasha contains sub-periods for all 9 planets, a complete 120-year Vimshottari cycle has 81 total Antardasha periods (9 Mahadashas × 9 Antardashas each).

The Antardasha modifies the Mahadasha's influence. For example, during Jupiter Mahadasha, a Venus Antardasha brings Jupiter's wisdom combined with Venus's creativity and relationships — a period often marked by marriage, artistic success, or spiritual-creative pursuits. The same Jupiter Mahadasha during a Saturn Antardasha brings a more disciplined, structured energy — career building through patient effort.

The duration of each Antardasha is calculated by the formula: (Mahadasha years × Antardasha planet's years) ÷ 120. For example, Jupiter Mahadasha (16 years) with Venus Antardasha (20 years): (16 × 20) ÷ 120 = 2.67 years = 2 years, 8 months.

How to Calculate Antardasha

To calculate Antardasha periods, follow these 3 steps:

  1. Step 1: Determine the Mahadasha period and its total years (e.g., Jupiter = 16 years)
  2. Step 2: For each Antardasha planet, multiply the Mahadasha years by the Antardasha planet's Vimshottari years, then divide by 120
  3. Step 3: The Antardasha periods start in the same sequence as the Vimshottari order, beginning with the Mahadasha lord itself

For example, in Jupiter Mahadasha (16 years), the Antardashas run as: Jupiter-Jupiter (2.13 yrs), Jupiter-Saturn (2.53 yrs), Jupiter-Mercury (2.27 yrs), Jupiter-Ketu (0.93 yrs), Jupiter-Venus (2.67 yrs), Jupiter-Sun (0.8 yrs), Jupiter-Moon (1.33 yrs), Jupiter-Mars (0.93 yrs), Jupiter-Rahu (2.4 yrs).

Antardasha Effects

The Antardasha planet acts as a secondary influence on the Mahadasha lord. There are 3 rules for interpreting Antardasha effects:

  • Friendly combinations: When the Mahadasha and Antardasha lords are natural friends (e.g., Jupiter-Sun, Venus-Mercury), the period tends to be positive and productive
  • Neutral combinations: When the planets are neither friends nor enemies, the period brings mixed results based on their house placements
  • Hostile combinations: When the planets are natural enemies (e.g., Sun-Saturn, Jupiter-Mercury in some contexts), the period can bring internal conflict and challenges

The most significant life events — career changes, marriages, health issues — typically occur when the Antardasha lord transits over key points in the birth chart during its own sub-period.

Frequently Asked Questions

Each Mahadasha contains exactly 9 Antardasha periods — one for each of the 9 Vimshottari planets. The Antardasha sequence always starts with the Mahadasha lord itself. For example, in Jupiter Mahadasha, the first Antardasha is Jupiter-Jupiter, followed by Jupiter-Saturn, Jupiter-Mercury, and so on in the Vimshottari order.

Antardasha duration varies based on both the Mahadasha and Antardasha planets. The shortest Antardasha is Sun-Sun (about 3.6 months) and the longest is Venus-Venus (about 3.3 years). The formula is: (Mahadasha years × Antardasha planet's years) ÷ 120.

Antardasha and Bhukti are the same thing — two names for the Level 2 sub-period in the Vimshottari Dasha system. "Antardasha" literally means "inner period" in Sanskrit, while "Bhukti" means "enjoyment" or "experience." Both terms are used interchangeably in Vedic Astrology texts.

Venus Antardasha is the strongest indicator for marriage timing, regardless of the Mahadasha. Jupiter Antardasha also supports marriage, especially when Jupiter aspects the 7th house in the birth chart. The 7th house lord's Antardasha is another marriage indicator. Astrologers look for Venus or Jupiter Antardasha periods when predicting marriage timing.

An Antardasha cannot fully override the Mahadasha, but it can significantly modify its effects. A strong benefic Antardasha (Jupiter or Venus) during a challenging Mahadasha (Saturn or Rahu) can bring temporary relief and positive events. The Mahadasha sets the overall theme; the Antardasha colors the specific sub-period within that theme.
