Jaimini System

Chara Dasha Calculator

Chara Dasha is a sign-based dasha system from Jaimini astrology — a distinct branch of Vedic Astrology founded by Maharishi Jaimini. Unlike Vimshottari (planet-based), Chara Dasha assigns periods to zodiac signs. It is widely used for career, marriage, and health timing predictions.

What is Chara Dasha?

Chara Dasha is the primary dasha system in Jaimini astrology (named after Maharishi Jaimini, a student of Vedic sage Vyasa). "Chara" means "movable" in Sanskrit — reflecting the system's dynamic, sign-based approach to timing predictions.

In Chara Dasha, planetary periods are assigned to zodiac signs (Aries through Pisces), not to individual planets. Each sign gets a period between 1 and 12 years. The starting sign and period lengths are determined by the position of the sign lord and special Jaimini significators called Chara Karakas.

There are multiple versions of Chara Dasha — the most commonly used are Chara Dasha as taught by K.N. Rao (based on his interpretation of Jaimini Sutras) and the version computed by Sanjay Rath. The two versions can produce different timelines from the same birth data.

Jaimini vs Parashari Astrology

Chara Dasha belongs to the Jaimini school, which differs from the Parashari school (where Vimshottari Dasha originates) in 4 key ways:

  • Sign-based vs planet-based: Jaimini emphasizes signs (Rashis), while Parashari emphasizes planets (Grahas)
  • Chara Karakas: Jaimini uses variable planetary significators (Atmakaraka, Amatyakaraka, etc.) based on degree position — Parashari uses fixed significators
  • Aspects: Jaimini uses sign-based aspects (Rashi Drishti), while Parashari uses planet-based aspects (Graha Drishti)
  • Padas: Jaimini heavily uses Arudha Padas for prediction — a concept less prominent in standard Parashari analysis

Many modern astrologers integrate both systems. They use Vimshottari Dasha from the Parashari system for general timing, and Chara Dasha from the Jaimini system as a cross-check — especially for career and marriage predictions where Jaimini techniques are considered stronger.

Frequently Asked Questions

Chara Dasha calculation depends on the sign in which the Lagna (ascendant) falls. For odd signs (Aries, Gemini, Leo, etc.), the dasha sequence goes forward from the Lagna sign. For even signs (Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, etc.), the sequence goes backward. Each sign's dasha duration is determined by the distance of its lord from the sign itself.

Chara Dasha is sign-based (assigns periods to Aries, Taurus, etc.) while Vimshottari is planet-based (assigns periods to Sun, Moon, Mars, etc.). Chara Dasha comes from Jaimini astrology; Vimshottari comes from Parashari astrology. The total cycle length in Chara Dasha varies, while Vimshottari is always 120 years.

There are multiple interpretations of Chara Dasha — the K.N. Rao version and the Sanjay Rath version are the most widely used. Both are based on Jaimini Sutras but interpret certain rules differently. Neither is universally accepted as the "correct" version. Most serious Jaimini students study both and compare results.

Many astrologers find Chara Dasha more effective for career and relationship timing because Jaimini's Chara Karakas (like Atmakaraka and Amatyakaraka) directly relate to career and self-expression. The Amatyakaraka (career significator) is a concept unique to Jaimini that doesn't exist in standard Parashari analysis.

This calculator focuses on Vimshottari, Yogini, and Ashtottari Dasha systems from the Parashari tradition. Chara Dasha requires Jaimini-specific computation (Chara Karakas, sign-based lordship rules, Arudha Padas) that is different from the planet-based Vimshottari engine. For Chara Dasha analysis, desktop software like Jagannatha Hora is recommended.
