FreeWhat is Vimshottari Dasha?
Vimshottari Dasha is the most widely used planetary period system in Vedic Astrology. The word "Vimshottari" translates to "of 120" — the system maps a complete 120-year life cycle across 9 Navagraha planets in a fixed sequence: Ketu (7 years), Venus (20), Sun (6), Moon (10), Mars (7), Rahu (18), Jupiter (16), Saturn (19), and Mercury (17).
The starting point depends on the Moon's Nakshatra at your exact birth time. There are 27 Nakshatras, each ruled by a specific planet. That planet becomes your first Mahadasha lord, and the remaining balance of time in that Nakshatra sets the duration of the first period.
This Vimshottari Dasha calculator computes the Moon's sidereal longitude using astronomical algorithms, identifies the birth Nakshatra, and generates the complete dasha timeline with exact start and end dates for every Mahadasha, Antardasha, and Pratyantar Dasha period.
The 9 Planets in Vimshottari Dasha
Each planet in the Vimshottari system rules a specific number of years. These 9 periods always follow the same fixed sequence:
- Ketu — 7 years: Spirituality, detachment, past karma, sudden events
- Venus — 20 years: Love, marriage, luxury, art, wealth, vehicles
- Sun — 6 years: Authority, government, father, self-confidence, career
- Moon — 10 years: Mind, emotions, mother, comfort, public life
- Mars — 7 years: Energy, courage, property, siblings, action
- Rahu — 18 years: Ambition, foreign connections, technology, unconventional paths
- Jupiter — 16 years: Wisdom, children, spirituality, wealth, education
- Saturn — 19 years: Discipline, karma, longevity, hardship, justice
- Mercury — 17 years: Intelligence, communication, business, learning
The Mahadasha lord's placement in your birth chart — its house, sign, conjunctions, and aspects — determines whether the period brings positive or challenging results. A well-placed Saturn Mahadasha can bring career stability, while a poorly placed one may bring delays and hardship.
How to Use This Calculator
To use this Vimshottari Dasha calculator, you need 3 inputs:
- Date of Birth — day, month, and year
- Time of Birth — as precise as possible (hour, minute, second in 24-hour format)
- Place of Birth — city name for geographic coordinates and timezone
The calculator supports 4 Ayanamsa systems: Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), Raman, Krishnamurti (KP), and Thirukanitham. Lahiri is the default and most commonly used. Select your preferred dasha depth level in Advanced Settings — from 2 levels (Mahadasha + Antardasha) up to 4 levels (including Sookshma Dasha).
Results show your complete planetary timeline with color-coded periods, current active dasha highlighted, and start/end dates for every period. You can print the results directly from your browser.
Frequently Asked Questions
The total Vimshottari Dasha cycle is exactly 120 years, distributed across 9 planets: Ketu (7), Venus (20), Sun (6), Moon (10), Mars (7), Rahu (18), Jupiter (16), Saturn (19), and Mercury (17). These 9 periods add up to 120 years and always run in the same fixed sequence.
At the time of your birth, the Moon occupies one of 27 Nakshatras. Each Nakshatra is ruled by a specific planet — that planet becomes your first Mahadasha lord. The proportion of the Nakshatra already traversed by the Moon determines how much of that first Mahadasha has already passed, setting the balance of years remaining.
Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) is the standard Ayanamsa used by most Vedic astrologers and is the default in this calculator. Raman Ayanamsa differs by about 1 degree. KP (Krishnamurti Paddhati) is used specifically in the KP system. If you are unsure, use Lahiri.
You can get an approximate Dasha timeline without exact birth time, but the accuracy will be lower. The birth time determines the Moon's exact position, which sets the Nakshatra and the starting Mahadasha balance. A difference of a few hours can shift the Dasha starting point significantly.
This Vimshottari Dasha calculator is 100% free with no registration required. You get full Mahadasha, Antardasha, and Pratyantar Dasha computation with exact dates, support for multiple Ayanamsa systems, and printable results — all without creating an account.
